How to Use This Resource

Database Layout

The databases are organized according to eight key components of a evaluation system. Within each component, the information is divided into topics, and then further divided into questions. The diagram below illustrates the organization of the State Teacher Evaluation Policies (STEP) database for Component 8: System Evaluation. To interactively explore the organization of each component for either the State Teacher Evaluation Policies (STEP) database or the State Principal Evaluation Policies (SPEP) database, select Browse the Components from the Contents menu on the right.

Eight Components

Gathering Information From the Database

The tools on this website allow users to retrieve information from the database in several different ways. The questions that follow describe three ways a user can gather information from the database to meet their specific needs. For each option, the website produces a printable PDF containing the information requested by the user.

  1. Are you looking for comprehensive information on one to three states?
    • Select Comprehensive Comparison.
    • Select either the State Teacher Evaluation Policies (STEP) database or State Principal Evaluation Policies (SPEP) database.
    • Choose your state(s) and click Submit.
    • The information will download in a new webpage. Depending on the browser you are using, you may need to select "open" when prompted or to click on the downloaded page at the bottom of your screen. The information will then display in a new tab in your default browser. The new tab sill display all eight components for the state(s). To print the information, simply select your browsers printing option, or hold down "Ctrl" and "P" on your keyboard.
  2. Are you looking for specific information on a single state?
    • Select Browse the Components .
    • Select either the State Teacher Evaluation Policies Database (STEP) or State Principal Evaluation Policies (SPEP) and use the expandable list of components, topics, and questions to identify which component and topic has the information you need.
    • Select Single Topic Comparison from the Contents menu on the right.
    • Select either the State Teacher Evaluation Policies (STEP) database or State Principal Evaluation Policies (SPEP) database.
    • Choose the component and topic you need, select your state, and click Submit.
    • The information will download in a new webpage. Depending on the browser you are using, you may need to select "open" when prompted or to click on the downloaded page at the bottom of your screen. The information will then display in a new tab in your default browser. The new tab will display all the state's information on the topic selected. To print the information, simply select your browsers printing option, or hold down "Ctrl" and "P" on your keyboard.
  3. Do you want to compare specific information across multiple states?
    • Select Browse the Components.
    • Select either the State Teacher Evaluation Policies (STEP) database or State Principal Evaluation Policies (SPEP) database and use the expandable list of components, topics, and questions to identify which component and topic has the information you need.
    • Select Single Topic Comparison from the Contents menu on the right.
    • Select either the State Teacher Evaluation Policies (STEP) database or State Principal Evaluation Policies (SPEP) database.
    • Choose the component and topic you need, select the states you want to compare, and click Submit.
    • The information will download in a new webpage. Depending on the browser you are using, you may need to select "open" when prompted or to click on the downloaded page at the bottom of your screen. The information will then display in a new tab in your default browser. The new tab will display a table comparing the information for your chosen states on the topic selected. To print the information, simply select your browsers printing option, or hold down "Ctrl" and "P" on your keyboard.
